Hi,

I have a panasonic DVD-S29S http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0007U0IRS?v=glance

I also have a HK 636 as my AVR
My question is:when playing DTS and Dolby tracks, is my DVD player encoding the sound and sending it to my AVR

or

Is my AVR encoding the sound directly (which I prefer).

TIA

The DD or DTS bitstream is being sent from your DVD player to your A/V receiver via the digital coaxial cable where the signal is decoded (not encoded) for playback.

Some earlier generation DVD players, however, had built-in DD/DTS decoders that sent a decoded signal to an A/V receiver via 6 analog cables for 5.1 channel playback.

As Vin said, it depends on the conection you already have. If you use a toslink or coaxial cable, the A/V does the decoding. On the other way, if you use the analog cables, then the payer does it.
