I have a Panasonic AE700 projector. I had a nice Panasonic 5 disk changer that died about 8 months ago. I replaced it with a Philips DVP-642, my friends all raved about this DVD player but more and more I am seeing it's flaws. Jaggies Jaggies everywhere. Every building, every sign, every crease in a shirt for heaven sakes.
What is the BEST progressive scan DVD player (picture and sound quality) out there for under $200?
BTW it doesn't have to have up-conversion, just a great picture. I only have 1 HDMI and that is used for Dish. So unless it's up-conversion via component I won't use it anyway.
See if you can try out an Oppo 971 or a Panasonic S77 (both Farouja based). They will probably end your jaggies problem.

It looks like 971 doesn't even do progressive over component according to some of the threads here. I was thinking about the Oppo 970 since it seems that is the only brand anyone here is recommending on a regular basis. The Panasonic doesn't seem to be a current model.

The 971 is a very poor choice of player if you will be using component cables.

I´m on the same ship. Trying to find a good progressive player over component. I would prefer to go for a dvi/hdmi player, the problem is that I need 50 foot cable, what I consider too risky. NowI have a 50' component.
The most recommended player nowadays in this forum is the 970, I do not find any other.
971 only applies for a dvi conection.
What mpeg-decoder and deinterlacer does the AE 700 have? Do you feel they are not so good for feeding 480i?
You may still be able to get the S77. And its component output is quite good (rated at 89 vs 94 for its HDMI - by HomeTheatreHiFi)

Monoprice.com. I have a 30 foot HDMI works great. Listen to the HTguys podcast, I think you can find it on the front page. Episode 100 or 101 they review a 50' HDMI cable, then they put that cable on an HDMI swiching device add 6 foot of cable and still have no problems.
