View Full Version : "Best" 480p via component DVD player?

I'm currently using an old Sony NS700P with my new Panasonic 42PD50U EDTV plasma. I'm wondering if there are any newer (under $200) single disc players out there that could out-perform this old unit. I use component connections and have NO NEED for upcoverting the output over 480p as that is the max resolution of my TV and I will not be getting a new TV for several years. In short, picture quality over component connection (480p) is my one and only priority. I don't care about anything else
Thanks!

The Oppo 970 is probably the best new, under $200, 480p component player out there. It also upscales if you want that capability one day.
You may be able to find a Denon 2200 at a bargain price, which IMO is better than the Oppo.

I was thinking of something brand new, but you're right - a used Denon 2200 is probably the best 480p component player for film-based DVD for under $200. The Panasonic XP-30 would be better if he watches a lot of video-based material.

i think he means that the denon has a better audio section than the oppo.

The Denon does have better video.

I read that the Oppo's "...component outputs do not support progressive playback, only 480i..". Is that still correct?

Yes, on the 971. Further, DVI is the only recommended output on the 971, not component.
The 970 will do both 480i and 480p over component, and also upscale non-copyprotected material. No restrictions on the HDMI port.

What about the Pioneer Elite 45A? I've seen great results with that player and it has DVD-A, SACD and great audio.

The 970 uses an inferior deinterlacer. It's better on the 971, but as pointed out, the 971 does not output 480p over component, only DVI. That is why I prefer the Denon.

That is an old player that is not up to the current models.

Check ebay for a philips dvd q50. I have 2 CRT sets and have tried 5 different
upconverting players and the results were less then stellar. I have two q50 players
and the 480p PQ is great. It uses the faroudja chip with DCDI but an older chip.
You can usually pick one up for less then 30-40 bucks.

Billp,
I´ve read Denon 2200 has problems when reading home recordable dvds (-R and +R). Do you have some issues with these?

I still would not rule out the Oppo 970. By any 480p component standard, it's very good...especially for film-based DVDs. Yes, there are better players out there for (a lot) more money and risk (anytime you buy something used from someone, you never know). You can buy a re-furb 970 for $115 + shipping from Oppo and get the standard one year warranty. That's a tough deal to beat.

I looked at the OPPO DIGITAL (http://www.oppodigital.com/) website and could find no mention of refurbished products for sale.

MY q50s play all my burned media. Many of the other players had problems with certain brands.

Is it possible than on the sub-$200 only the new Oppo 970 or the old Denon 2200 or 1600 are the only good dvd player over component?

They are probably the best in that price range. The older Panasonic RP91 might be an option. Of course, the RP82 and Xp-30/50 are virtually the same as the Denon 1600.
I'd just go with the Oppo 970.
The Panasonic S77 uses the Farouja to deinterlace 480 over component. A great picture! Of course, given the farouja your mileage may vary. A stores still have the S77.

Faroudja may give one macroblocking...depending on display. Just something to keep in mind if you purchase one of those players.

I had a Panasonic XP30 when I had a projector. I got rid of the XP30 because gradiations in color turned "blocky" in comparison to my old Sony player.

Wondering: has anyone ever attempted to rank players by Component-output performance, from the (monster) Benchmarks data/reviews? Or maybe KD has done it/could do it OTTOHH.

All the players awarded by The Home Theatre Hi Fi over component ( a referenci on Benchmark tests) are discontinued Panasonic players, like RP82, XP 30 and Denon 1600. All of them with MEI MN67753IKA mpeg decoder and Genesis FLI 2200 deinterlacer.
All the new ones have one or another problem.... :( :(

You are NOT going to believe this!
I just ordered an Oppo 970 online. In the comments section I wrote that I was going to be connecting it via component cables.
Flash forward 5 minutes... my phone rings... it's someone from Oppo! He just called to make sure I knew I was only going to get 480p over the component connection! I explained how my new EDTV had native 480p resolution and I was aware that the max component would carry would be 480p. Can you believe this? This must be the BEST customer sevice EVERY. All I can say is WOW!
