View Full Version : I Fear for Bedroom's Life

Had two power outages in 4 months. Both times it locks up my bedroom 5040. The only way to have a successful reboot is to yank the network and cable input.

Why, WHy WHY????? (In my best Nancy Kerrigan voice).

Everytime lighting strikes within 20 miles our power flickers. I was well worth the money to buy a little UPS to keep everything recording during the blip.

I don't like all of the reports of empty Replays after power problems. I put all of mine on UPSs to prevent that. That gives me plenty of time to shut them off and let them stop recording before I turn them off.

Hmmm. My opinion is that the bedroom is a place where activities other than watching TV are important and TV is a terrible distraction to said activities. Move the TV to the living room and make the bedroom a shrine to...I don't think I have to tell you.

Every replay in my house is on a $40 400va UPS (belkin and APC for the most part.. I think I have ONE cyberpower.)

Oh yeah UPSs are highly reccommended. I'm using an old 1400VA Best Fortress. Usually available on the surplus market for $25-40 without batts. It runs many things such as computer, networking, WiRNS server, alarm clock :)

I have seven DVR's, and every single one of them is hooked up to a UPS. Most of the units are relatively inexpensive APC's, but my main home theater in the basement gets the royal treatment with one of these (http://www.panamax.com/products.cfm?group=1&sec=detail&id=259&ly=h) bad boys. There is no better feeling in the world than to have to lights flicker and know you're equipment is totally safe. :)

4 Replays all on UPS. Bought them (the UPS-es not the Replays) at CompUSA when they had a special about 18 months ago. Regularly $50 on sale with mail in rebate for $7.

How are you guys dealing with fan noise?

You might want to ask your fans to keep their applause to a minimum in the bedroom.....

The Replay in the bedroom is in a closet, if the noise is too bothersome, we close the closet door. In the family room there are three plus a whack of computers. We just ignore it there.

I deal with it by having the Replay in a remote location, and use an RF remote. I just ran a coax from the Replay (in the living room) to the bedroom, and use the RF remote from the bedroom. I even have a coax ran outside so I can hook up a portable TV for outdoor viewing. Works great, and only one Replay needed.

But these are educational DVD's and TV shows...

plus, the adult jungle gym takes up most of the living room already...

I use the little fan controllers that compusa sell for 10 bucks. They have 3 speeds and a beeper if the fan fails. I have 4 units. All on the lowest speed and one on low speed in a glass cabinet, never had a heat issue.

APC UPS are overrated.

Besides, at least in my expereince the RTVs loose Either Ethernet or Phone during lighting - sure the power stays on but contacting the mother ship stops.

In past two years I've lost
5040 Ethernet (repaired by mikeyboy)
5040 Modem
xbox power supply
xbox power supply
dvd player
Various router/switch ports

All were connected to an APC UPS of varying sizes around the house.

Two months ago I installed a whole house surge arrestor at the distribution panel in my garage.

I still unplug the plasma when I hear lightning - thunder rather..

Slack-

You don't need a UPS, you need a new house in a different state.

I used to work for a company that was responsible for maintaining the RIFD equipment at Sunny Point, NC - the sheer quantity of equipment that our FSE's would have to change out every month due to lightning dammage was staggering. Most of this equipment was NEMA-4X rated too...

If you have anything plugged into a phone line, please use a surge suppressor for the phone too! In the old days it would fry the whole computer, but now days the wires are so fine inside the modems that it usually just fries the modem.

But the $5 28k on the PC had one. ARRGGGH!

Surge suppressors are cheap & easy. Besides, I don't think I can afford the cost of living in Uberglitch.
