View Full Version : Onkyo SP1000 has lip-sync timing errors... Is there something I can buy to fix this?

Hello,

I recently bought an Onkyo SP1000 dvd player, and think it is great for sacd, redbook, and general dvd playback and functionality.

But... I have the lip sync problems. The timing is all off, and is a major deal breaker.

I remember reading here that someone hooked his SP1000 up to some box, and this piece was able to fix the timing problems.

Can anyone tell me what exactly I need, and how to do this? I would like to keep the player if possible.

Thanks,
Goatwuss

Some processors include a function to adjust for a lip-sync delay. For example, Rotel refers to it as a "group delay." It basically delays the audio signal for a specified time (in milliseconds) in order to better synch to the video signal.

While I have not experienced this delay with my SP1000, others who have reported it seem to see it only sporadically. In this case, a consistent delay may not alleviate the issue.

Are you using the hdmi output for video? If so, make sure you're using the 'Digital 2' output for audio. This may or may not have anything to do with it, but it is the recommended usage.

Hello Blind

yes, the timing problem is intermittant - happening sometimes, while not at other times. A consistent delay wouldn't fix it.

Yes, I am using HDMI output for the video. I am using the 2ch. downmix analog outs for the audio, as I am plugging the audio into a 2ch preamp. For sound I run a high-end 2channel setup.

Would the "ABT's Precision AV LipSync" in the DVDO scalers solve this problem?

Thanks

The sp1000 has audio delay feature using the 7.1 outputs.

yes, the dvdo product would also correct your problem. No better multi format player out there for audio at the price....as I listen to Legion of Boom. ;)
I've had mine a year and a half now and don't have delays anymore. Strange but good.

Mimason -

Given that I have a 2ch analog preamp, how will I be able to take advantage of the audio delay?

Also - I contacted DVDO. Their lipsync correction only works on the digital audio, I would need some way to get analog to my preamp.

Thank you

Are you using the SP1000 for processing? You only have a pre amp? If so, then you can set up the audio for 2 channel only in the SP1000 and tweak the AV sync setting in the setup menu. The av sync feature only works with analog on the sp1000 so you sb covered.

The way I understand the AV sync in the SP1000 is that it applies a static (ie. 50ms) delay to all video. This won't work, because the lip-sync delay that I am experience fluctuates.

Am I missing something?

I was in the same boat as you and kept the player in hopes that the issue would be resolved since the player was so good in every other respect.

I related my experience in this thread:

I just found out today that the service center Onkyo claimed was working on the unit doesn't even have a record of ever receiving it. So no one is quite sure where it is.

My recommendation is to return the player and get your money back while you still can. Onkyo has some of the worst customer service I've experienced from a consumer electronics company.

I understand what you are saying and recommend you trying a higher delay setting like 100ms or so and see if that works. The brain is much more forgiving on delayed audio than delayed video so you may never even notice a small variation in audio delay.

Gulganei is right about Onkyo service though. They are terrible. It make Sony seem great which I consider barely acceptable.

mimason - am I correct in my understand that the DVDO VP series applies a DYNAMIC correction to the lip sync problems of the Onkyo? Always the right amount of delay at the right time?

I had an HD+ and don't remember if it corrected it or not. I am guessing no but you could check the vid processor forum.
