In the UK (and the rest of Europe I guess), source components like DVD players and satellite boxes can send a signal to a display that tells the display when to switch to anamorphic widescreen mode. It works very well (except on letterboxed 4:3 material, which is treated as 4:3).
Can source components in the US do this? If so, how does it work?
In the UK, two methods are used to send the signal. The older method sends a control signal through pin 8 on the SCART lead. (NB SCART leads are like a crude analogue version of HDMI in that they send video, audio and control signals). The more recent method incorporates the control signal into an unseen line (line 23) in the video.
I have noticed that the auto widescreen switching does not work when playing US DVDs on a UK DVD player and TV.
