http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7675697&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat95100050006&id=1134702498462

and it looked really nice hooked up to a beutiful hd source. then he had the sony hooked up all crapy on clearence. he said that the samsung looks nicer and he cept talking to me and now i dont feel so confident about the sony.

ok im the adverage person not a perfestional is the crt sony that much beter then these lcds to make me choose to get a big huge tv? like he said that lcds look better. is this true? like if i dont have them side by side i just have one of them in my room playing 360 is the crt really that much better? i mean my dad said i can get earther one. i mean i saved up a long time and i dont want to drop 1k and get the rong thing can anyone give me some feed back?

he mentioned that sony is droping all of their crt sets coming in to 2007. why would they do this if it is really better.

my main question is should i really buy old technology vs the new technology if the crt is better then why is the market moving towards lcd?

Unfortunately the best CRT manufacturing have scaled back or quit making CRT models
all together. You might be able to find a 34xs955 or 36xs955 on clearance or over the internet. If you are really lucky you might find a 34xbr960. Those sets are the gold standard for most of us.

You'll get a sharper picture with a 1080p LCD than you will a 1080i CRT. But the colors won't be as good on an LCD. On the other hand I don't know if a 720p LCD would even have a sharpness advantage over a 1080i CRT as sharpness is typically the biggest advantage flat panels have over CRTs right now. Seems to me it would be about a draw in terms of sharpness. Right now the color reproduction of CRT HDTVs can't be beat by anything else. The biggest advantage of CRT over LCD is that CRTs handle SD wayyyyyyyy better than HD LCDs. SD channels are a blurred mess on HD LCDs. This is because most CRTs have an alternative output resolution for SD where LCDs have to upscale the content and it usually ends up looking pretty bad. But yeah, there are lots of people who think that CRTs are inferior just because they are an old technology and they are big and bulky. A guy at work laughed at me for buying a CRT HDTV, lol. He's got a Sony LCD that he bought several years ago. But I'll bet that mine looks better than his, especially when it comes to blacks, color, and displaying SD content. Anyway, if you do decide to get a 32" Samsung 768p LCD instead don't get that one. Here is a better one.:

This one has 6000:1 CR rather than 4000:1 so the blacks and color will be better than that other one.

But personally if I was going to get a LCD I wouldn't bother with 720p. With a 1080p LCD you are going to have an extremely sharp picture with HD content. Yeah, the color reproduction of LCDS isn't where CRTs are yet but the phenomenal clarity you'd get with that resolution would trump that. Just don't expect SD to look very good, heh heh.

A 720p flat panel vs a 1080i CRT is a matter of opinion. You are going to get lots of different viewpoints. Imo 1080p flat panels outdo them all...but they are expensive. You probably are just going to have to go to the electronics store and do a lot of looking at display models to decide for yourself.

My opinion might help you a little, as I went through this SAME quandry last year at this time. I sold my 30" Philips CRT widescreen set and first bought a Samsung 32" LCD HD set. Way too much signal processing. Plenty of annoying artifacts giving you an unnatural picture. Washed out blacks, flicker, ect.
So, I upgraded to the gold standard. Sony XBR HD LCD. Much better than the Samsung. Better blacks, much cleaner picture and a much more natural picture.
But, guess what? I bought a Toshiba HD DVD player. Even though the detail was amazing, I was consistently disappointed by the poor shadow detail. My set was professionally calibrated and was as good as it could be.
So, I ended up buying a Sony 34HS420, which I'm told has the same tube as the XBR970. Now, the detail isn't as good as the XBR LCD, but the shadow detail is excellent. Colors are excellent. I much prefer watching my HD DVD's on the CRT Sony versus my XBR LCD.
I remember the first HD DVD that I watched- Van Helsing. It's a dark movie. It was very lifeless on the LCD tv. Very mediocre shadow detail. When I played the same HD movie on the CRT- wow! A whole new world of deep blacks, shadow
detail, deep color. I was amazed.
It IS all down to personal preference. I can tell you that HD DVD looks better than regular dvd on an HD CRT. It's as good as the set can look and you get a MORE CINEMATIC experience watching HD DVD's on a CRT than an LCD.
I just picked up Mission Impossible 3 and watched it last night. WOW! I thought I was at the show.

Yeah, that's basically what it comes down to with LCD vs CRT: Sharpness vs color and blacks. What matters more to you should dictate your choice. You do have another choice though. DLP has better color and blacks than LCD does, although even that isn't quite on par with CRTs in those categories. Also, DLPs are cheaper than LCDs.
