View Full Version : Weight Room Sound System
I need to place a sound system into the weight room that measures 48' x 38' and has a suspended ceiling. I am looking putting in six, 6.5" speakers in the ceiling. Since there will only be a cd player used to produce sound, do I really need a receiver. An mp3 play may be used as well. Is it logical to save money on the receiver and spend more on better or more speakers. I am open to all suggestions. Thanks.

Well, you will need a pre-amp device of some sort....
How high is the ceiling?

What kind of budget do you have to work with?
The ceilings are about 8' - 6" and I have an $800 budget.

Do you want this as a background music type of thing or something more serious?
Probably more toward background music, but, I would be interested in discussing "serious".

For that size space I would consider using only 4 in-ceiling speakers, which has the added benefit of easier amplification options (no speaker switches needed).
The Dayton line of in-ceilings available at Parts Express would work well. You can get a competent pair for less than $100.
Google Audiosource Amp 100 - that will give you enough power and connections for the 4 speakers and it's availabe for around $100.
So far you're up to $300 - grab a $100 cd player at BB or Circuit City and you're there for half your budget.
To play an ipod you would need a 3.5mm mini jack to RCA cable - available at parts express as well. They can also sell you the speaker wire.
