My living room HT setup consists of a 32" HDTV LCD display, an HTPC driven by MCE 2005 and an XBOX 360. The sound pumping from the TV is obviously not great, so I'm thinking of amplified speakers or maybe even surround sound, mainly because I want to play music thru HTPC and hear DVDs and 360 games in surround sound. My HTPC mobo has a 6 channel built-in sound card (via the mini-jacks i think) and the 360 has optical sound out capabilities.

I don't exactly want a receiver right now, so how can I get surround sound from my HTPC and 360?

Buy one of the logitec surround systems for the computer. I think that one of the speaker sets has multiple input options.

hmmm... so the computer doesn't need a AVR to decode the surround sound (dolby/dts) signal?

No, it doesn't. That's what your sound card can do and that's why it has 5, 6 (or higher depending on model) analog audio outs.
