Does anyone know which A/V Receivers will allow you to rename inputs? i.e. Instead of a Video 1 label you could rename it DVD or something else. Preferably something in the sub $1000 range and HDMI switching?
Thanks in advance...

Denon 3806 for sure, but there's gotta be other brands as well.

Both the Panny SA-XR57 - HDMI 1 to 1 switching - and its cousin, the SA-XR700 - HDMI 2 in/1 out - provide for renaming the digital audio input settings. Optical and coax.

Marantz SR7001/SR8001, and presumably others in the range.
HK has had the feature for a few generations..

almost every model from all manufacturers does that. I have seen quite a few of them that let you do that
My NAD T743 has this feature. I'm assuming all of their AVR's in that class will also.

If this question is with reference to the Panasonics, the SA-XR57 is $292.88 on Amazon. The SA-XR700 is $749.88 on Amazon (Vanns).

I just want to make sure I'm not confusing anyone on my original post. I want to rename inputs not reassign. If the default name is Video 1, I want to rename it to Sony TV or Cable Box. I tried to do this with an Onkyo 674 at Circuit City but couldn't figure out how to do it, neither could the Salesman helping me. I downloaded the manual and could not find any info in the manual that said it could be done.
Thanks for all the help and I'll check out your suggestions...

It can only be done with what ever is in the avrs memory that is installed by the factory of the maker of the avr...

The Panasonics have four assignable digital audio inputs. The Onkyo has six. That means you can reassign predetermined names to various input jacks. Page 44 of the Onkyo manual:
"Input selector Default assignment
"DVD COAX1
"VIDEO 1 OPT1
"VIDEO 2 ----
"VIDEO 3 OPT2
"TAPE ----
"CD OPT3"
You can reassign these names to different inputs but there is no way to create new names such as "Sony TV."

The OP is asking about renaming the OSD/menu items, like "Video 1" or "DVD" to something like "Cable" or "HD DVD."

yes, most receivers from all manufacturers will let you rename the inputs

Maybe on the higher end models but not on the entry level receivers. I know the Onkyo 5 series line doesn't let you rename the inputs. Neither does my HK 325. I think that started with the HK 430/630 or HK 435/635 line and up and maybe the relatively new 340 does it now.

I have the Yamaha RX-V2700, which allows for renaming (although I haven't tried it yet).

For what it's worth, the Onkyo 674 will not let you do it either.

Back 10 years ago, I bought a AC-3 receiver. It could rename inputs. I didn't think much of as as I had previous DPL system in the early 1990's that did that as well. Then in 2000 I went and investigate a number of TOTL models and they didnt offer this feature. It was a bit frustrating as I have tons of gear that I keep forgetting the input locations especially for old gear like reel to reel, DCC, and specific gear like having multiple types of VCR decks W-VHS, D-VHS, S-VHS, hi-8. I ended up actually keeping the old AVR longer than expected because fo this.
Is/was renaming inputs that hard to implement?

Seeing the previous posts of Onkyo models that will not allow you to change input names, I can vouch that the Onkyo TX-SR703 DOES allow you to do this. My display now shows "MG-35" instead of Video 3, "iPod" instead of video 2, etc. The only input that doesn't allow this is Tape (which sucks, because that's what my DirecTV Tivo is running through; it's a long story--too many components, too few assignable optical inputs). Anyway, like others have said, most manufacturers provide this feature, but it looks like it's only on their mid- to upper-end models. I'm surprised the Onkyo 674 doesn't do it.
