I've got the onkyo 602...in the manual, it says that the mic should be horizontal. is that to where the mic is facing the receiver? I've always done it to where the mic is facing the ceiling, and the threads for a tripod are facing the floor. which is right, and does it matter?

Just follow what the manual says since it's designed differently with other companies that have autosetup features...

that's what I'm confused about...which horizontal orientation should I use? the manual has no pictures.

Slightly angle the mic at 30 degrees pointing towards the center channel speaker from your seating position which is the method I use with my spl meter which you should also get to calibrate your system properly...

The 604 Manual says "You can adjust the height of the microphone by using a tripod or level table." Horizontal means just what you described. The threads for the tripod are facing down, the microphone is up. These are omnidirectional microphones.

My Panny XR700 manual says:

" • Place the setup microphone on a flat surface to stabilize it. Examples: a level bench sharing the height with the seating area, a top section of a sofa, etc.

" • Set the microphone at seated ear height.

" • Use a tripod (for camera and other products) for best results."

If one assumes that you want equal sensitivity to all the speakers, the orientation will depend on the spatial properties of the mic. In most of the setups I've used with the measurement mics used (mine or provided by the component manufacturer), the mic is placed at the listening position and pointed up to the ceiling.

ok, thanks. I didnt know if the tripod had an arm that made the mic face a different direction. to me, horizontal indicates that the mic should be facing the receiver, with the threads to the wall. all clear now.
