I have just finished wiring my rack, pretty much a complete electronics and projetor update to the rack and am having an issue with the Audyssey setup. I am using external amplifiers instead of the internal amps which I am sure is the source of the problem. When I select the auto setup option under auto setup/Room EQ menu, and tell it to start, I don't hear any test tones and the system just returns to th Auto Setup menu. I am assuming it can tell their are no speakers connected to any of the internal amps so it does not run the test. While there are ouputs for people that want to run external amps, there doesn't appear to be a way to tell the Denon that outboard amps are being used. My assumption is I will have to do the speaker/room setup manually and not get the benefit of the Audyssey analysis. Anyone have any ideas on how I can get the Audyssey program to run?

One thought I had was to wire the speakers to the internal amps, run the analysis of the room, then move the speaker cables back to the external amps. But I have just finished wiring and tie-wrapping and don't want to have to undo all that work if I can avoid it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

When you start the auto setup are you pressing the Enter button or the Left Arrow Cursor button? You have to do the latter to start the Auto Setup properly.

You don't need to tell the Denon that you're using external amps. The mic will pick up on where the test tones are being produced from, whether that be via it's own speaker terminals or external poweramps etc.

Does the 4806 apply diff. eq to each speaker ?

ie. I have mains that play down to 24hz, I wouldn't want to cross them at 80hz..

Does it let you set diff. xovers for each channel ?

Can you change the EQ once it's done to suit your needs ?

Regards,
Jose

Denon/Audyssey detects the presence of a channel/speaker by the signal it gets fed back from the microphone. However, it will only test those channels that you have told it are connected. This worked just fine for me with the 4806 and an external amp.
Does the 4806 apply diff. eq to each speaker ?
Yes.

Does it let you set diff. xovers for each channel ?Denon lets you do this. It is somewhat independant of the Audyssey EQ.

Can you change the EQ once it's done to suit your needs ?Not Audyssey but there are other controls in the Denon.

Read the 4806 or other Audyssey threads here. Lots of information that is directly relevant to your situation.

Thanks Jase, don't I feel like an idiot. Yesterday was my first time with the menu structure on the Denon, and now it makes sense. Worked perfectly except it set my RF/LF to large, other than that, it functioned perfectly. Thank you all for your suggestions.

Martin.

Martin. That's what it does. You can, of course, reset them to SMALL post hoc.

My experience is that Audyssey gets crossover and large/small wrong most of the time. After running Audyssey I always have to go in and change the crossovers to 80Hz and set all my speakers to small. This is a very common occurrence.
