well here is what im looking for...
mostly what im getting an hdtv for is gaming, (ps3), i want the tv's native resolution to be 720p, and i dont want to spend any more then about $1700 (the cheaper, the better). Its a relativley small room, but I dont want the tv to be any smaller than 32" (the bigger the better). I dont care at all about style, all I want is great image quality and performance, I dont care what type of tv it is (plasma, lcd, ect...) and I want a tv that is not going to have "burn in" problems.
that may be a lot to work with, but any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.
If you are doing gaming and don't want to worry about burn-in, stay away from plasma. As far as I know, LCD and DLP don't have many burn-in issues. I'm a fan of LCD but I think comparable DLP sets go for less.
A couple of things. One, plasma's pixel-shift has been helping with reports (or lack there of) of burn in. Second, DLP does have some lag issues with gaming (Xbox 360 for me). It is noticeable, and can cost you many deaths online:( I game on a 1080P DLP Mistubishi and love it, but the lag on older games (i.e. Halo 2) costs me lives! The newer games (i.e. GOW) don't seem to have any problem with it (except using 'DLP lag' as my excuse for getting chainsawed in the face). So, depending on how Sony's online works for gaming, it could effect your decision.

i have read that dlp sets have "game lag" what ever that means... is this true?
*edit* never mind, I guess it is true.
So I should go with a newer plasma or an lcd, any recomendations??
The plasma has some break-in requirements that should/MUST be followed. LCDs have been said to have "ghosting" issues, but I'm pretty sure it depends specifically on the set and game system and game resolution (multiple factors obviously). I stress about everything, and am personally looking into an LCD set (40-50"), so I don't think I'll be too interested in a plasma for gaming. There are just too many things to have to do to keep it pristine with zero risk. I would be the one to do every one of those tasks for anti-image retention, and drive myself crazy making it perfect. With LCD, likely won't have to do any of that.
Oh, and "lag" happens when, for example, you go to beat someone down when they are in front of you, and the split-second "lag" in picture movement makes you miss. Happens a ton when sniping as well. You pull the trigger where you think the guy is, and the split-second lag moves him/her just that much to ruin your head shot.

ok, I understand the lag thing now.
are there any cons with rear projection tv's? and how is there image quality?
thanks for your help so far

My friends are wowwed when they see hidef or xbox360 on my Sony,
the main comment is it looks better than other display types they have seen or that looks 3D man:
If you are willing to go to 1080i the Sony xbr960 at 1400+x1080i(that's if you can still find one) gives an outstanding picture and is probably unmatched for contrast, color etc.
Just checkout the many screenshots with the xbox360 online and compare to others.
Tapout at teamxbox in OFFICIAL HiDef 360 Game pics thread has many good examples

However it is heavy and 24" deep and discontinued.

I can understand that man.
I heard that to, however sony has made quite a few 1080i tvs over the years, so if any body can make a firmware fix they can, I guess most are leaving the sony PS3 at 720P, which the sony xbr960 accepts and then upscales to it's native 1080i res.
Older 1080i user that have tvs that cant accept 720P or screwed bigtime until sony updates its firmware with a fix.
Good luck with your HDTV choice.

does the xbr970 accept 720p signals? so it would work with ps3?
