I want to use an external (wireless) microphone with my new HDR-HC3. Unfortunately, the camcorder doesn't have a mic jack; you have to use the Sony Hot Shoe interface.

My question is - is Sony the only choice for a wireless mic, or are there other vendors that are making compatible devices?

Thanks.

with mp3 player/recorder so cheap and tiny now you can probably record the audio with an mp3. when downloading HDV from HC3 you can also plug the mp3 into the pc and download the audio into the video capturing/editing software. then all you have to do is to match the timeline and save the file. that way you don't have to be concerned about the mic issues.

Don't know about other vendors... but I hacked the hot shoe base off of a sony mike and used it with another wireless mike setup. The hotshoe fits on the sony as normal and a set of wires comes off of that and plugs into a wireless reciever that I wear on my belt... works good.

I can tell you to steer clear from the small shotgun mic that Sony sells thats compatible with its hotshoe connector. While it does work in somewhat increasing the volume of the person directly in front of the camera, while limiting sound from the sides, it also turns the overall sound quality into teh "terrible" zone, making everthing recorded like its been spoken into a tin can.

Its a $70 hunk of junk. Get the external Stereo mic or the BlueTooth mic, I believe those are themain options right now.

Yeah, I'd be getting the BlueTooth mic. I was just wondering if there were compatible devices, or if Sony was the lone option.

Thanks.

HeadRusch is right. As I posted over 2 months ago when I first shot with my HC3, the shotgun from Sony is to be avoided at all cost. When using zoom, it takes all the bass and adds treble to the sound. I also agree that it sounds like coming from a tin can. I tried many ways to correct it with editing software and have yet to find out how. Has anyone tried their "stereo" model as I do not want to waste my money and precious footage again.
Many Thanks.
