so i'm buying a new lcd tv, the samsung lns4051da, wich i believe is 720 native and can do 1080i. my question is should i get a tv that does 1080p instead? i have an xbox 360 and will get an hd box. Is there a big diff. ? also i really like the samsung lcd's but should i be looking at different samsung model? is the 96D way better than the 51D? sorry about all the questions....i wanna make sure I don't regret my purchase!

It all depends on you mostly. Watch out though for samsung overscan in gaming... I saw a nasty picture of rainbow 6 i think where the Hud were really cutted out.

As for 720p, if money is not an issue, for sure go with 1080p. But again, 720 vs 1080p depends a lot in the screen size you choose and the distance you sit from it plus the contrast of what you are watching..

I have a little bit more to add to this thread. Blue-Ray looks fantastic on 1080P. How would it look on 720P? Would it be silly to even consider using blue ray on a 720P or 1080i display?

How close will you be? I have a 720p (32")and 1080p (37") display. At 10 feet or so I can't tell the difference. Up closer though I can. Screen size is also supposed to matter, and at 40" you are just about on the cusp of where it might. For most high def (720p, 1080i, or 1080p) either set and resolution would be good at normal viewing ranges.

just as ED 480P Plasmas look fantastic displaying HD material, almost as well as HD 720P Plasma panels, I suspect 720p panels will look fantastic displaying 1080P blue ray discs, better than how they look with 720P material, though a hair under the quality that a true 1080P panel would provide (assuming we are talking 50" or more, AND seated at a close enough distance from the screen. If not, then 1080P matters little).

cruel--1080p displayed on a 720p set is NO better than 720p content displayed on a 720p set(IN FACT, MAY NOT BE AS GOOD-NOT SURE EXACTLY). the 720p set just does NOT have the resolution capability to take advantage of it. also, you have to be sure the 720p set ACCEPTS a 1080p signal first, as many 720p native sets do NOT accept 1080p signal. pioneer does for sure.

this may be academic, as 1080p content(dvd or gaming only) is meant to be dispalyed on a 1080p set! thus, if you do not game or plan on getting a whole bunch of 1080p dvds(from where?) to play on bd or hddvd, and sit closer than 6-7 feet, then DO NOT BUY A 1080p TV!!!! jeroldd

Plasmas are not 720P (except the 37" panny @ 1024 x 720) They are either 1024 x 768; 1366x 768p; 1024 x1080i or 1920 x 1080p. With the exception of the 37" I submit you get more picture information by inputing a 1080i or p signal and having it downconvert to the diplays native resolution rather than sending it as 1280 x 720 an effectivley throwing away pixels and detail.
