Okay, I'm looking to upgrade my very old stereo equipment. I only have two devices that use HDMI (an upconversion DVD player and DISH receiver box). Everything else will be component. I want better sound than what's coming through the TV, and having the extra connections in the back would help a lot. I'm not an audiophile so I don't have to tweak every last little thing and 5.1 is fine for me.
I need new speakers and and a new receiver with HDMI I/O. Am I going to be able to get away with anything for less than $500?

Very few options under 500 and with at least 2 HDMI connections.
Check out Onkyo TX-SR604 (you might be able to get SR674 for a little more than 500) and Pioneer vsx-1016txv (no audio over HDMI though. You will need an optical cable connection for audio).

Sherwood's RD-7502 is well under $500.
