I'm new to the forum and was a bit disappointed not to find general "primer" articles posted on AVS website. I'm sure there are lots of display technology debate threads in this forum but with so many posts, it's hard to find them. Perhaps someone can provide a link to such a thread, or refer me to another website with up-to-date comparisons and advice on competing flat-screen and rear-projection display technologies.

As a side note, a recent article in Consumer Reports compared LCD and Plasma, but didn't even mention DLP. This seemed odd because in a previous CR article, DLP was touted as having overcome many of the problems associated with other display technologies, and was already price-competitive. It's not that I consider Consumer Reports to be the best authority on home theater, but the absence of any mention of DLP in the recent survey did catch my attention. And what about LCoS?

I'm in the market for a 50" to 60" monitor (optimized for watching conventional DVD's in wide-screen format) and I have no clue where to start...

Since my original post, I found a good primer on display technologies at the audioholics website. Based on what I learned, it seems I need to worry less about display technology and more about finding a monitor that satisfies my objectives without breaking the bank.

Very interested in:
watching standard definition DVD's in widescreen format
watching standard definition satellite TV (I have the DISH PVR 508)
a display that looks great at 11' viewing distance

Not interested in:
integrated tuner (nearest TV station is about 70 miles)
HD resolution

Because I want to watch DVDs in widescreen, I ruled out a display with 4:3 ratio. Moreover, I think a digital tv would offer more flexibility in managing and displaying different source ratios. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I would appreciate all the advice I can get. I don't imagine my objectives are that unusual. I realize most of you are heavily into HD, but with DVD formats still being sorted out, and the dearth of HD content on the satellite, I'm not ready to upgrade my DVD and PVR.

thanks,
David
