Is it possible to watch material in 4:3 using HDMI?
I have a Sony 34XS955 and a Panasonic S77. The S77 was recently repaired and so, for the first time, I can now use HDMI. Problem is, I can no longer put the screen mode in " Normal Mode" wich is 4:3. It will only display in "Full Mode".
This is very annoying when watching tv show on DVD.
I don't know about Panasonics specifically, but it sounds like your question is a more general one. And the short answer is, "yes." I have my cable box hooked up via HDMI, and it does output 480i (and 480p) in 4:3 using HDMI.
Perhaps it's your DVD player.

I'll try the same question in the DVD forum then.

It is possible that your TV does not allow certain TV modes on the HDMI input.

If so, there has to be someone on AVS who would know.

The TV is likely locking into FULL mode because you are inputting 1080i or 720p upconverted by your DVD player. My HS510 locks to FULL mode for any HD input. However, I was under the impression that the later models, XBR970, 960 and XS955s did not lock into FULL mode.
