View Full Version : Open Box Purchase - Pioneer 5071?

I'm considering buying an open box model 5071 from Best Buy, it's a reasonable deal now, and I think I can get a better deal if I ask (Best Buy will negotiate on open box items).

The set looks in good condition physically. I sat and watched it for a while, no dead pixels from what I can see. I switched inputs to a black screen and saw zero evidence of burn-in or IR. The set looks just as bright as the others near it with the same settings (leading me to believe it's not super old).

I came back home to figure out how to get into the service menu and check how many hours the TV has on it (pretty important for a plasma). If anyone has this information on hand and can post asap, that's great. I'm gonna search around for a while until I find it. Also does anyone know if the sequence is any different for the 5071 as opposed to the 5070, I know the remotes are slightly different.

I've yet to ask the salesman about stuff like return policy or warranty (is the basic pioneer one still valid?). If anyone can chime in about BB policy in these areas that'd be great.

I'm just posting to get some positive/negative reactions from anyone who may have done this. Normally I know buying a used plasma is a pretty bad idea, but in this case I can inspect the unit fully before buying and (hopefully) check the hours. Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

Well, I bought it. Just got it out of the packaging and up on my crappy old tv-stand (soon to be replaced).

It's drop dead gorgeous in my family room.

And I haven't even turned it on yet.

Congrats. Open box items carry the same warranty as new ones as far as my experience is.

Yeah the Pio warranty is still intact and I have the standard 30 day money back guarantee from Best Buy.

It looks massive in my room. Running into some lag issues with my PS2 :( Need to find a component output cable for it also (hopefully this will improve the picture vs. s-video?).

Also, I don't have my HDTV box from Comcast yet, so TV is pretty mediocre SD so far.
