Hello everyone this is my first post and I was a little disturbed to find out after I bought the LG DN191H for my dad that it did not up-convert to HD through component video and only HDMI with store bought dvd movies.

Currently it doesnt seem anyone has found a way to disable HDCP which would allow it to work though component, my question is...

Say you got and HDMI to DVI cable because there are DVI to component adapters out there, im not sure about HDMI to component adapters but if you got an HDMI to DVI then DVI to component would this allow you to view upconversion to 1080i on your HD tv? because essentially you are using the HDMI in your dvd player.

Also, I am pretty sure all HDMI, DVI and Component use the same concept of the 3 colors, I have never really took apart a HDMI cable to look at it but if the first thing isnt gonna work is there a way to splice together HDMI to component cables??

thanks hope this all makes sense.

PS. this is seriously false advertising on part of LG because nowhere on the box does it say through HDMI only

All major brands of upscaling DVD players only upscale over DVI or HDMI, so no, it is not false advertising (you did not do your homework). You have 2 options: just output from the player at 480p, which should give you an excellent PQ, or return it for one of the few players that will upscale over component (a search of this forum will lead you to several threads on that topic).

Hmmm... didn't do his homework? I happened to be researching this player this morning and found this thread. I also found the manual for the DN191H on the LG USA website. The manual indicates it will output 720p and 1080i on both HDMI and Component.

besides the homework issue, what does anyone think of the idea of the hdmi to dvi to component?

And does best buy sell any up coversion dvd players that will allow component video, I bought my LG at best buy and im assuming returning it they will only give me a gift card in return.

you cannot convert hdmi or dvi to component with just a change of cable. It has to be transcoded by a transcoder box. These are also a vanishing breed.

No mainstream manufacturer sells a dvd player that will upconvert via component any more - not since the zenith 318. the lg 531 or lg 418 will both upconvert via component but you have to install updated firmware available from lg (search the 531 or 418 mega threads for the link and instructions).

the oppo 970hd will upconvert via component but you have to install "hacked" firmware. search the 970HD thread for the link to the firmware and instructinos.

i'm intentionally ignoring the neuneo latest players which claim component upconversion, but generally there are playability/usability issues with those players.

If you have a modern digital display (you don't say what your display is), then Billp's probably right. either feed your set 480i or 480p(and let it upconvert/scale).

Best,
jeff

It doesnt make any sense to me why they would make these players so they wont up convert through component video what does component video have to do with copyright things at all. my monitor is a samsung 27" hdtv dont know the model number off the top of my head. It will do 420p off this dvd player but i would much rather prefer 1080i res.
