Need Mid-range and simple 5.1 Receiver recommendations

Just picked up a set of Infinity TSS-750PLT's from Costco ($249)... and I'd like to find a receiver to go with it.

My needs are quite simple, I have a HDTV tuner in the PC, and we watch DVD's. (Also need a DVD player).

Im not sure I even need or want a AM/FM tuner anymore.

But no receiver I've ever had (except maybe a recent $200 Philips HTIB, which wasnt bad at all actually) was easy enough for my wife.

I prefer a *rotary* selector for source, and in fact prefer rotary knobs for things like tone. The Infinities are reportedly a tiny bit weak on mid range, so the receiver would need some way to incrase the midrange. Also, The infinity sub works best at 120hz, so the cutoff needs to be adjustable at the receiver.

Other than that, the simpler the better!

Thanks for any input...

HD DVD encryption cracked?

TO THE MODS: I do not support Software Piracy. This post, and related article, are for discussion only.

See article here:

HD DVD Encryption Cracked? - Toms Hardware

Looks as if some crafty person hacked the ACCS Protection on HD DVD Titles using an XBOX 360 HD Drive and some Java Skill.

I'm not sure how this will affect the HD/BD War, as I know the Movie Studios are not gonna be happy.

However, I'm still convinced the main reason the original Playstation sold so many units was due to the ability to play "backup copies".

Maybe this will generate interest in HD DVD Hardware and, in turn, interest in "legit" HD DVD purchases.

Basic Question Volume Leveling

I am using comcast digital capable with built in DVR and an older Denon tv. However, I notice that during commercials the volume goes way up and it is much worse during DVR playback. Volume can go up by as much as 20% ....IT IS fU&^%ING LOUD!!!

Do the new recievers today provide volume leveling so that no matter what is fed, they can keep a constant level? Or are there other suggestions?

Thanks!

- which TV picture setting is best....Bright or Brilliant? and whats the difference?

- how do i bring up the menu to change the broadcast setting (720p, 1080, etc)...i think it has something to do with shutting the cable box off or something?

- I hooked up my speakers and the sound is coming out of the speakers, buit i cant control the volume and mute functions on my cable remote...how do i fix that?

I just bought the LG 37LC2D and am trying to program the remote to work with all of my components. Does anyone know a code that will work with a Motorola satellite receiver? The charts do not include any.
Also, I have read that this TV should have a zoom 3 control w/ 12 settings. Mine does not. Could LG have discontinued this feature in the newer TV?

Best receiver plus DVD player for ~$450?

I need a new receiver and DVD player. I need to bring these in around $450. I am currently looking at a Panasonic SA-XR57 and a Panasonic DVD-S52.

I have a five speaker surround setup right now, all Polk RC-65i in wall speakers. I will add a subwoofer in February.

What other DVD players and receivers should I look at? They don't have to be the same brand. I would like more than one HDMI input and I would like a receiver that can use its own amp and crossover to power a subwoofer.

Media Portal /FFDShow

After many frustrating hours of trying to get Zoomplayer to work with FFDShow, I spent about half an hour and had it working perfectly on the advanced settings with media player classic.
However I am not overly keen on media player classics user interfaces, and have seen that you can use FFDShow as a post processing filter in Media Portal.
I selected this filter in Media Portal however the FFDSHow OSD is not present, & therefore I assume that it is not running.
Are there any other steps except add then select the FFDShow raw filter in MediaPortal Setup?

About to expand my HD family and go format neutral w/ a PS3 60g soon. I noticed that the it has an SD card reader. Well I'm also looking at the upcoming Panasonic HD camcorder that records onto SD cards. Does anyone know if the PS3's can playback AVCHD videos from the SD slot? I know from the PS3 dissection thread that someone mentioned that is does play AVCHD files via DVR-R's. Actua

Does anyone have any ideas on what the SD card reader can or cannot do?

Thanks,

Panasonic SC-HT920 problem

Unit is aobut 1 1/2 years old, always worked fine. Lately when playing either a CD or DVD, unit will start up fine, run for maybe to 4 minutes, and then stop playing. It's almost like it will do a reboot. Disk will stop (no error message) and then it will try to restart. It will again reread the disk. If you repush the play button, it will start over again, and then after maybe a minute, repeat the whole process.

If I use the unit for anything else (radio or other aux. imputs) everything works fine. Just malfuntions when using the player.

I don't think heat is the problem, nothing is on it or near it, no doors or eclosure. I've double checked all my connections. It's feeding a Pannasonic 42" plasma via the component hook-ups.

Any help appreciated,
Terry

Is the PS3 right for me?

I have a 480p/1080i CRT. I keep hearing things on how the PS3 doesnt have a scaler to do 1080i and that it only outputs 1080p/720p for HD and that people like me have to suffer because it will only put out 1080p on my tv. Is this true?

Is there any work around like a receiver that has inputs for hdmi and then the receiver converts the 1080p signal down to 1080i to my tv?

DVD drive speed using VLC?

I have been looking all over for information on how to do this but cannot find it anywhere (or I'm just missing it), but I am trying to find of if I can control the speed at which my DVD drive spins when playing movies using VLC ( VideoLAN client).

I know that the drive only needs to spin at 1x when playing a DVD, and I would like to keep the noise to a minimum while playing DVDs with my HTPC.

Does anyone know how to control this using VLC? And if it's not possible with VLC is there a better software DVD player that can do it (for free preferably).

Simultaneous Devices with the Harmony 670

Maybe I missed it somewhere, but how many devices can the 670 control simultaneously? I see that it has dedicated activity buttons, does that equate to component buttons? I would like to control my TV, ReplayTV, Cable box, DVD player, Receiver, and possibly my XBox. So, a total of 6 devices...can this remote handle 6 devices at once? I have been using a Radio Shack 6-in-1 Kameleon, buy it is unable to learn any commands from my newer AV gear. Also, I am sick of pumping batteries into the damn thing.

I am thinking about buying the Harmony 670 and would appreciate any feedback that anyone can offer. $100 is about my max price range, so if anyone knows of any other similar remotes that they like, I would appreciate info on those too. Thanks.
